AFU GM Minutes 07-15-2007
Present: Christian (facilitating/greeting), Possum, Angel (minutes), Gary
Agenda:
- 1.
- a) Combining principles and methodology working groups.
b) Combining mailing lists/workgroups in a more general sense where feasible for sake of efficiency.
2. Improving dispensation of concepts in anarchist theory/history vis-a-vis
newcomers.
3. Visioning aftermath notes.
4. Incorporating concepts from Alcoholics Anonymous "Traditions" vis-a-vis
organizing principles.
1.
Possum brought up combining the principles and methodology mailing
lists/working groups, suggesting that there is a natural congruence there with
each informing the other, past informing the future. Angel suggested that
there may be other mailing lists/ working groups that could be combined to
reduce clutter. The group decided that the other lists/groups were fine as is.
2.
Christian suggested organizing short-day workshops for newcomers to the AFU
in order to familiarize them with the salient concepts in anarchist
history/theory. The group thought it was a good idea.
3.
Christian wanted it noted that Mike Smith had suggested to him that he
wanted to work on the Visioning Aftermath write up and wanted the notes for
such that he thought were in Christians possession. Christian brought up the
confusion because he was under the impression that Rob Teaxeira was working on
this and had the notes. Also mentioned that Sharmeen was difficult to
contact, post-visioning.
4.
Gary, having previous experience with Alcoholics Anonymous methodology,
suggested that the AFU should study these organizing principles because they
have much in common with the anarchist approach. Key similarities:
-Self-sufficient, autonomous groups, linked by a common set of "traditions".
-Rotating duties within such groups, for instance a 6 month treasurer
position, a "shit-or-get-off-the-pot" approach.
Gary also suggested that a good way to approach loose set of organizing
principles was via mission statements. Christian suggested that Gary be added to
the principles mailing list, and Gary was open to the suggestion.
